🌸LIT102 Blog #11- A Farewell to LIT102 and the Beginning of New Literary Horizons

Dear friends,

As we approach the final stretch of our time in LIT102, and as I write this my final blog, let us take a stroll down memory lane. A big shout-out to our awesome teacher, Mrs. Lazarus. She did not just teach us about literature; she made it burst with life!

Mrs. Lazarus took us on a writing journey, unraveling the secrets of storytelling, descriptive, and persuasive words. She even made poetry a bit magical. She emphasized starting our writing with a bang to grab readers, and that stuck with me.

We also dove into the stages of writing development and the six traits of good writing, like sailing through waves of wisdom. We used these traits to check out students' writing and our own if we were paying extra attention.

And can we talk about the blast we had with 'All About Books'? Definitely the highlight for me! Now, let us carry what we have learned back to our classrooms. I am pumped to try out cool strategies like authors' chairs, crafting awesome 'All About Books,' and cheering on peer reviews. All strategies that were employed in the teaching and learning process.

This LIT journey is not a goodbye; it is a grand hello to new beginnings. Let us stick together as a literary family, sharing ideas and helping each other grow in our classrooms.

So, I stand, not at the end of a road but at the beginning of a new chapter. The ink may dry on our LIT102 adventures, but the stories we've written and the skills we've honed are the treasures we carry forward. As we bid farewell, let's not view it as the end of the road but as the opening of a new book, waiting to be written with the quill of our newfound wisdom.

Until we meet again my dear friends, I bid you adieu and best wishes on your literary journey in your classrooms and in life!

Yours Truly,

Your favourite blogger,

Andrea...💞💞

🌸LIT102 Blog #10- Beyond Words: The 6+1 Traits

Diving into the world of analyzing students' writing with the 6+1 Traits is not just dissecting words; it is a journey. Each trait acts as a guide, unraveling the layers of understanding and expression.

Ideas, the doorway to students' minds, go beyond surface likes. It is about uncovering the sparks of curiosity, where comprehension evolves beyond mere memorization. As a teacher, this exploration provides a profound insight into the depth of understanding, guiding me to tailor my instructional approaches to meet the unique needs of each student.

Organization decodes the silent language of coherence, showcasing a narrative mastery that transcends stating facts—it is crafting a logical symphony. This skill, honed through the 6+1 Traits, not only refines students' writing but equips them with a structured approach applicable across subjects.

Voice, the third trait, breathes life into reflections, weaving a tapestry of diverse perspectives. Encouraging unique voices transforms the learning experience into a rich blend of individual threads. As a teacher, it allows me to appreciate the diversity of thought in my classroom, fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is celebrated.

Word Choice paints an artistic flair. In nuanced expressions, the depth of reflective thought emerges, elevating reflections into a nuanced dialogue. This not only enriches the students' writing but also sharpens their ability to articulate thoughts with precision—an invaluable skill in any academic or professional pursuit.

Sentence Fluency, the rhythmic heartbeat, transforms reflections into a literary journey. Each well-crafted sentence propels the reader through the landscape of thought. As a teacher, witnessing this fluency fosters a sense of pride, knowing that students are not just conveying ideas but doing so with a captivating finesse.

Conventions, the guardian, ensures reflections are not just expressive but easily comprehensible. It's a skill extending beyond class, preparing for future pursuits. This meticulous attention to correctness is a transferable skill that prepares students for the demands of higher education and the professional world.

The 6+1 Traits offer insight into preferences, styles, and interests. Varied suggestions become a collaborative dialogue, empowering students to shape their learning journey. In the classroom, this feedback loop informs future sessions, making the educational experience a co-created venture between students and teachers.

In essence, these traits are more than evaluative measures; they're instruments cultivating a deeper, nuanced, and collaborative educational experience, which made it MORE than just the highlight of my week; it evolved into a pivotal aspect of the entire educational journey.

The visual above provides a more comprehensive view of each trait and offers straightforward questions to ensure individuals stay focused on the specific aspects of each trait.

Using this 6+1 trait in the classroom in analyzing each other's (students') pieces of writing, truly harnesses a comprehensive understanding of not only their strengths but also areas that need improvement. Ideally, this is definitely a skill that I believe is much needed to have students attain a critical eye in both reading and writing. I can definitely see this posing a challenge to my students in the classroom. However, anything that is challenging is surely worth it!

🌸LIT102 Blog #7- Voices Unleashed: The Author's Chair Chronicles🪄

In the cozy confines of our LIT102 classroom, a "magical"🪄 event just unfolded – The Author's Chair. Though shy, my classmates and I sat in anticipation, as we awaited that brave "Bobby" to share a piece of their final narrative.

Amidst the hushed whispers of anticipation, one brave soul took the stage. In the spotlight of The Author's Chair, a captivating story unfurled, weaving a spellbinding narrative that held the room captive. Peers leaned in, hanging on every word, as the author shared their creation with unwavering confidence.

The air buzzed with creativity and camaraderie. The Author's Chair became a sanctuary where voices found resonance, and dreams found expression. In those fleeting moments, courage met creativity, transforming a simple classroom into a vibrant hub of literary exploration.

As applause filled the room, a sense of accomplishment radiated from the beaming faces of the writers. The Author's Chair had worked its magic 🪄, empowering my classmates to share their stories and inspiring others to do the same.

In this brief yet profound encounter, The Author's Chair became more than just a seat; it became a symbol of creative triumph, reminding us all that within the world of imagination, there are no limits – only endless possibilities waiting to be explored.

I particularly loved😍this strategy that Mrs. Lazarus used. It really fostered a sense of community within our class, encouraging us to appreciate each other's unique voices and narratives. The implementation of this strategy not only showcased our literary talents but also nurtured our confidence and public speaking skills. Perched upon the chair, I experienced a profound sense of purpose, feeling akin to royalty as I shared my thoughts while my classmates attentively listened to my piece. I suggest more strategies like this be used in our class to not only improve our writing abilities but also to boost our confidence as teachers.

I eagerly anticipate employing this strategy upon my return to the classroom. it promises to greatly enrich students' writing journey, fostering confidence and skill in their writing abilities while nurturing a sense of camaraderie among their peers.

Have you ever used this strategy in your classroom? How was this experience for both you and your students? Leave your comment below.

🌸LIT102 Blog #6- "Yuh Hookin Meh"

Grab your fishing line guys! It is time to go fishing! Not literal fishing, but writing fishing. Ensure you have your line and your rod, but most importantly, ensure you have your HOOK!

You may be wondering "What does a HOOK have to do with writing?"

A story's hook is like the yummy worm on a fishing hook. It's the tasty bit that makes fish interested and bites. Similarly, in a story, the hook is the exciting start that grabs readers' attention and makes them want to read more. It's like the first exciting moment in a fishing adventure that makes you curious about what might happen next. Just as a fish gets hooked because of the tempting bait, readers get hooked on a story because of its exciting beginning.

I always believed we simply crafted a story and that was the end of it. I was unaware that this was the term used for it.
Hooks can be inner thoughts, dialogues, action, imagery, or anything to capture a reader's attention. It can be a compelling and engaging opening sentence or paragraph.

What intrigued me in this session about hooks, is its ability to create curiosity, pose questions, or present captivating scenarios right from the beginning. A well-crafted hook can evoke emotions, spark the reader's imagination and make them invested in the characters or the plot. it sets the tone for the entire narrative, creating anticipation and compelling the reader to continue reading to find out what happens next.

I can definitely relate to intriguing hooks in my younger days when I was an avid reader. I could never put down a book! Sometimes even when my mom sent me to bed, I would have my little flashlight, fighting to continue reading. This was because of the hook!
"What happens next?" "Why is this happening?"- These were all questions that had me stimulated, drawing me into the story and keeping me engaged from the very start!
worm 🪱= the hook
fish 🐟= me
I was hooked!
It was "hookin meh!"

I aspire that in the future, students in my classroom will not only be intrigued and captivated by hooks as "worms" 🪱 , but also develop the ability to be skilled "fishermen"🎣 who can captivate readers themselves in their writing. Not only am I trying to create great writers, but also avid readers.

Here are some interesting hooks I stumbled upon. Throw out your bait and see what you can reel in!

What do you think about these? Post your comment below

Until next time guys... toodles! ❤️

🌸LIT102 Blog #5- 🦋Writing Metamorphosis 🦋

Have you ever wondered how writers learned to tell stories? Have you thought about your own progress from scribbling to creating detailed stories? These thoughts crossed my mind during our LIT102 session this week, where we delved into the different stages of writing.

🐛 Think of a small caterpillar crawling on a branch, just like new or EMERGENT writers starting to draw and write their first words. Their advancement, though limited, unfolds gradually as they grasp the idea that writing communicates a message, and they start examining and pretending to read their own compositions.

𖡉 As the caterpillar wraps itself in a cocoon, it's like EARLY writers who, with practice, begin to form simple words and sentences, even though they might find language a bit tricky, much like a caterpillar moving through branches. Invented spelling has become a common practice among these students who have an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds. During this cocoon stage, they actively participate in the writing process. They carefully plan what they will write about, craft their initial drafts, and then meticulously revise their work to enhance its meaning and incorporate intricate details.

🦋With time and patience, the caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly, similar to how DEVELOPING writers grow. They write clear paragraphs, and their vocabulary expands like a butterfly's wings, ready to soar. Though one step higher, these writers have not yet attained the level of mastery.

🦋🦋Skilled or FLUENT writers, like fully grown butterflies, effortlessly use language to craft engaging stories.

But what caught my attention was the stage of developing writers. Imagine a chrysalis slowly opening, revealing a newly formed butterfly's vibrant colours. This stage represents a writer's journey, where dedication and creativity come together, unfolding into expressive writing, much like a butterfly spreading its wings for the first time, ready to explore the world. These writers not only engage in extensive planning, revising drafts, and editing their work (part of the writing process), but they are also starting to develop their unique voices, much like a butterfly unfurling its wings for the first time. I believe in our role as educators, it is our responsibility to guide them into the world confidently. This can be achieved by instructing them on developing and organizing their ideas, teaching them to adapt their writing for various audiences, and emphasizing the importance of prewriting. There is significant room for shaping and nurturing young writers at this developmental stage, as their potential for further growth is vast.

Classes that encourage reflection, such as these, evoke a sense of nostalgia in me, reminding me of my own journey and growth as a writer during childhood. I have undeniably undergone a metamorphic change in my writing journey, leading me to the “write” path. At this moment, my strong resolve is to encourage my students to undertake this rewarding journey as well.

Until next time... toodles!

🌸LIT102 Blog #4-Epic Tales: The Narrative Odyssey🤠

Under the vast blue sky, a group of writers gathered at the crossroads of Imagination and Creativity, ready for an exciting adventure. They were about to embark on a treacherous road trip to explore the world of narrative writing. Each sentence they wrote, marked a mile and every paragraph offered a different view.

They began their journey with loads of ideas, creating characters, setting the timing, and places like unexplored lands and magical forests. The plot thickened as problems and conflicts came into play. These brave writers ventured on, encountering twists and turns on winding roads, their hearts pounding out their chests and imaginations running wild. They had to make quick stops to compose themselves.

Alas, they stopped at Emotion Junction, where they felt everything deeply, from musical laughter to tears falling gently like rain. Challenges came popping in frequently. However, every challenge they faced in their writing was like a new turn in the road, transforming their story into something amazing.

As they continued, they arrived at Climax Street. Armed with figurative swords and sensory imagery shields, these brave writers navigated the suspenseful parts, eager to make it to the end, where everything would make sense and feel complete.

Finally, they reached Resolution Rest Stop, which was the end of the narrative writing expedition. Though tired, the writers were indeed satisfied. Their characters found peace, problems were solved and their story had an ending. Yet, this was not the end for our dedicated writers. They knew more roads had to be explored and more stories were waiting to be written. With imaginative minds and hearts full of excitement, they set out on a new journey, knowing that the open road of storytelling was their forever adventure.

What a thrilling week we had diving "headways" into the world of narrative writing. I think my piece above really captures the essence of a good story. At this point, I am tailoring it for my kindergarteners, as the little ones looovvvveeee sharing stories. But guess what? I am eager to try this approach with older students as well!

Here are some tricks I think can work for both younger and older students
Firstly, I would suggest modeling-- reading aloud and showing them the ropes of narrative writing. Kids learn so much from seeing and hearing stories come to life!
Another great idea is using story starters or prompts. These little nudges can really spark their imaginations and get their creative juices flowing.
Graphic organizers like story maps or plot diagrams? These are fantastic tools! They help the children sort out their ideas and put together a great story, once used correctly.

I am curious though, what other tips do you think will work? I would love to hear your thoughts! Drop your comments below!

Until next time everyone...toodles!

🌸LIT102 Blog #3- Learn to Write With Me (The Writing Process- Take #2) 🧐

I discovered and learned a lot about the writing process last week from Mrs. Lazarus in our LIT102 session. However, I realize now, that I blogged prematurely last week. This is so because I delved even deeper this week and gained some newfound knowledge. Therefore, I am presenting to you, part 2 of "Learning to Write With Me"

Lights💡 Camera 🎥 ACTION! 🎬

W hen the pen hits the paper, a topic springs to life!

R elax and let the ideas flow, like a river.

I n time you will curate information like a library, growing bigger and bigger

T weak every word, every mark, with precision and care!

I ncorporate each notion into a take, deep and rare.

N ever fixate solely on the final goal but,

G rant your readers a journey as each sentence rolls.

P repare to revise, for the task is never complete!

R eview, regroup, and refine the beat.

O rganize your ideas with a thoughtful mind!

C raft vivid scenes and worlds, where readers find

E ntrance from reality's grip...

S urrender to inspiration, and let your creativity rip.

S hare what you have written; see it in its own perfection!

The process of writing is not a single event, but rather a cycle, involving stages such as pre- writing, drafting, revising, editing and finally, publishing.
The beauty of the writing process lies in its transformative power. Through the act of writing, ideas take flight, as thoughts and feelings are expressed in a way that is deep and creative. Since this process as aforementioned is recursive in nature, writers have the flexibility to revisit and revise their work iteratively.
The stages of pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing represent the dynamic phases of the writing process, enabling individuals to meticulously refine their work by moving back and forth between these stages as they see fit.

Take this, my second attempt as an example; notice how I refined my post on the writing process? This is because I gained a deeper insight during this week's session!
Remember guys, planning is crucial for the effectiveness of this process. It's okay to go back and forth!

Here is what really, really, REALLY caught my attention this week. Although it might appear insignificant, the exercise of having my classmates evaluate my descriptive piece for the assignment prescribed, proved to be extremely beneficial. Having another person assess your work offers a fresh perspective as they can highlight: your shortcomings, areas that require improvement, and aspects that you may have missed on your own, which ideally can enhance the quality of your piece. In listening to my classmate's assessments of my work I could have definitely seen where I needed to add a little more 🥩 (meat) to it.

Here therein lies the beauty of the writing process--the ability to revisit and enrich my content based on feedback shared.

Talk about the “write” path! This is definitely an exercise I will consider continuing on my journey to literary excellence! Until next time guys... toodles!

🌸LIT102 Blog #2- Learn to Write With Me (The Writing Process)🤓

Certainly, it holds true that learning is possible at any age. This week’s LIT102 session proved to be a significant learning experience for me. Delving into the intricacies of the writing process was quite daunting since it was entirely new territory for me. This was definitely my highlight on this week.  As a kindergarten teacher, my focus has traditionally been on teaching students basic skills like holding a pencil correctly, writing their names and forming basic sentences- the foundational aspects of writing. Exploring this new teaching method was eye- opening.

Approaching this unfamiliar process, I realise that it demands time and patience. Nevertheless, it is incredibly valuable for both students and teachers. Unlike a linear path, this approach to teaching writing is recursive. What I find particularly appealing is the continuous back- and- forth nature of the process. It allows for editing, error correction, proofreading and even incorporation of new ideas that might emerge during the writing journey.

Even though I have never implemented this method in my grade level, I understand that as a primary grade teacher, I might be assigned to different grades in the future. Teaching the writing process has piqued my interest, as it presents an opportunity to nurture my students’ writing skills-a skill that, I must note, seems challenging for many students to master.

In the video above that I came across essentially outlined the process, providing valuable insights into its intricacies.
Have a look! You just might learn even more like I have.
Until next time, toodles!

🌸LIT102- Blog #1-"All About Books"

Promoting Writing in the Primary Grade is undoubtedly a course that holds significant importance in my college journey. Our instructor, Mrs. Lazarus, was well- prepared to lead both my classmates and I on this educational path. We commenced our journey with a thorough discussion of the course outline and immediately delved into the course material. Amidst the swift pace and substantial content, the “All About Book” strategy particularly stood out to me.

The “All About Books” approach presents an exceptional means to nurture self- expression and creativity in young children. Simultaneously, it offers valuable insights into their personalities, life experiences, interests and even their curiosity about various topics. I am genuinely excited about employing this strategy when I eventually return to the classroom, as it not only engages children in activities related to book, which might I add, have become increasingly rare nowadays, but also provides a compelling motivation for writing.

This strategy is especially noteworthy as it emphasizes the significance of the child’s interests, igniting a genuine passion for writing by allowing them to explore their favourite topics. What’s remarkable is that this approach can be applied across different grade levels, starting from kindergarten and progressing upwards.

As our classes in this course continued, it became evident that writing is indeed a complex task that involves a diverse range of skills. While we strive to encourage students to participate in writing activities, we, as educators, must delve into the minds of our students to understand what might hinder them from embracing writing wholeheartedly. It is clear from observations that many students harbor a negative attitude toward writing and often lack the motivation to engage in writing activities.

In my belief, by implementing the “All About” strategy, we have the potential to alter this negative perception among students. Writing can sometimes be perceived as a daunting task, particularly when students feel they have limited information or inspiration. However, with the guidance of this strategy, teachers can kindle the flame of interest in writing, leading students to become more open to expressing themselves and their ideas.

In my opinion, this strategy is outstanding for numerous reasons. It allows teachers to incorporate various themes and expand students’ vocabulary effortlessly. Moreover, the structure of “All About Books” is user-friendly and can be completed in just a few days, depending on the teacher’s objectives and grade level of students.

Here are some simple steps you can follow in your classroom when creating “All About Books” with your students

Step 1: Select a topic- choose a topic of interest and provide a brief example of what you expect from your students

Step 2: offer prompts to students- invite students to share information and ideas related to chosen topic, using the provided example as a guide. Let them know that this information will be used to create their book.

Step 3: show samples- display sample “All About Books” for students to examine. These samples serve as references and guides, helping students understand your expectations

Step 4: Organize Content- decide on the order of sections, pages, illustrations and content for the books. This step helps structure the book.

Step 5: write and create- distribute prepared book templates to students, and have them start filling in the relevant content, including illustrations.

Step 6: review and make adjustments- encourage students to review their work and make any necessary edits. Provide assistance where needed to ensure clarity and correctness.

Step 7: finalize the book- after revisions, guide students in adding finishing touches. They can decorate the pages and create their cover page.

Step 8: share and celebrate- showcase the completed books in an exhibition, allowing students to share their creations with their peers as well as celebrate their achievements as budding authors!

These steps can be adapted to suit different grade levels and classroom objectives, making it an adaptable and enjoyable project for students of varying ages and skill levels.

🌸Something New

What a delight to try new things! My first time blogging! Who knew it was this easy to blog? Definitely not me. Mrs. L seemed to be having a bit of trouble with her email accounts. Nonetheless, my classmates and I seem to have gotten the drift of this new blogging experience. I trust that I'll be able to incorporate blogging into my classroom when I do return.
